Mark Thurlow started diving in 1973 in high school and has worked as a diving professional ever since. Starting in retail sales at the Diving Locker Stores in San Diego, his career took him into professional diving where he has recovered 35 downed aircraft and numerous sunken boats.
In 1982, Mark started his own company, Hydra Marine, specializing in light construction, salvage and remotely operated vehicle operations. Mark’s diving history includes working in the oceanographic /scientific field doing side scan surveys, biological assessments and hazardous materials sampling.
For the past 14 years, Mark has been working in the film and television industry with such noted filmmakers as Howard Hall, Mike DeGruy, Marty Snyderman and Al Giddings. A partial list of his film and TV credits include:
In 1995, Mark got his first rebreather, a CCR 155. His teachers were Cmdr. Clark Presswood SEAL (Ret.) who specialized in underwater operations, rebreather research and training, as well as Howard Hall and Bob Cranston, both pioneers in using rebreathers in underwater filmmaking. Mark currently has over 1500 logged hours on rebreathers and does much of the technical maintenance on his and the other filmmakers’ rigs.
